Shopper put on supervision after headbutting supermarket worker in Lanarkshire

A shopper who attacked supermarket staff after being accused of stealing makeup has been put under supervision for two years.

Bernadette Taggart headbutted one female Asda employee then punched and spat on another.

Taggart, of Tinto Crescent, Wishaw, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week and admitted two counts of assault.

The 39-year-old also admitted threatening or abusive behaviour, but her not guilty pleas to charges of stealing cosmetics and resisting arrest were accepted.

The court heard Taggart turned up at the store in Morningside Road, Newmains, at 10.30pm on February 12 last year.

Staff suspected she was taking items through a self-service checkout without paying and challenged her.

Taggart responded by hurling abuse then assaulting the two women.

She also threatened to "wreck" a car belonging to one of the workers.

Police officers arrived to find Taggart still shouting and swearing.

After being arrested she started spitting in the police station and officers had to cover her head with a spithood.

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce pointed out that his client had no history for this type of offending.

Sheriff John Speir said that, given her lack of record and her family responsibilities, he was willing to impose an alternative to custody.

The sheriff ordered Taggart to carry out 200 hours of unpaid community work.
