Residents in Wishaw and the surrounding areas are being invited to make new friends and become more active by joining new health walks.
The walks are being organised by Get Walking Lanarkshire, and the programme is a joint venture between North Lanarkshire Council and neighbouring South Lanarkshire Council that has been running since 2014.
The aim is to engage people who usually walk very little or not at all on outings led by trained volunteers on risk-assessed paths, so the pace is suitable for everyone.
A new health walk is starting in Wishaw on Wednesday afternoons with the first one taking place on February 8.
Project co-ordinators Gosia Lipaj and Paula Hubens are encouraging people to come along and get involved.
Gosia said: “It’s a partnership programme between North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire councils. Paula and I are working together. Most of our walks are weekly walks and at the moment we have 34 different weekly walks across Lanarkshire.
"The Wishaw walk will be every week from the wellbeing centre which is situated in the former cinema at Kirk Road in Wishaw.
“The walks are suited to everyone, they last no longer than one hour and the pace is slow so they are suitable for everyone. We are mostly aiming at people who don’t walk much, or not at all. It’s just to get them into moving and walking more. There’s a social aspect to the walks as well.
"We promote it as a way to get healthy but the main aspect is the social one, it’s a great way to meet new friends and also get some fresh air. And it’s not jus about physical health it’s about mental health as well. We’ve worked with LAMH to set up this walk and get it going.”
The Wishaw Health Walk will leave from the from the Food for Thought Café and Wellbeing Centre at 1.30pm on Wednesdays. You can book your place in advance by emailing: getwalkinglanarkshire@northlan.gov.uk or calling 07903 358424.
