Major update on Josh McDaniels and Patriots offensive coordinator job

The New England Patriots have reportedly interviewed Josh McDaniels for their offensive coordinator job.

McDaniels has been viewed as the Patriots’ top candidate even before coach Mike Vrabel started conducting interviews. Vrabel said it would be a thorough search with a long list of candidates, and he has methodically worked his way through those interviews.

On Tuesday, it was reported by ESPN’s Mike Reiss that the Patriots’ head coach interviewed McDaniels for the job. Not only did McDaniels interview for the job, but as of right now, according to Reiss, he is viewed as the favorite to land the gig.

McDaniels hasn’t coached since being fired as the head coach for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023. When he last worked for the Patriots, they were a playoff team, and former Patriots quarterback Mac Jones was a rookie Pro Bowler.

McDaniels returning to New England would be a feel-good moment for fans. It would also be a major addition to the development of quarterback Drake Maye and the struggling offense.

The team has struggled at coaching and developing talent since he left. With head coaching likely in his rearview, he can settle in for the long haul of helping to rebuild the team to the perennial playoff contender that he spent years coaching for under Bill Belichick.
