Thousands of motorists face being fined after a major change in speed limit rules.
The Met Police has cut its speed tolerance by 1mph and it could soon be introduced across the country with the National Police Chiefs Council saying they intend to review the guidance. The small change will make a huge impact as there has been a reported 259% increase in drivers who could be fined for breaking the speed limit.
While it is obviously illegal to be speeding anyway, there has always been a reasonable amount of leeway. The guidelines used the formula that drivers could drive at 10% over the speed limit plus three mph before facing punishment, but now that has dropped to 10% plus two mph.

Before it would mean that drivers could go as fast as 25mph in a 20mph zone before facing punishment but under the new rules that has dropped to 24mph. The Met Police actually reduced its speed tolerances from 10% plus 3mph on May 14, 2019, but never announced the change.
When asked about the change, the force reportedly said: "Posted speed limits are the maximum speed that road users should travel at any time... irrespective of the speed threshold that police commence enforcement action."
