Major search operation underway for walker, 60s, in the McGillycuddy Reeks

A major search operation is underway after a Tipperary walker failed to return from his hike on Wednesday.

Rescuers and gardai were alerted to the situation at around 11pm last night when John Dunne did not return to his home after hiking in the McGillycuddy Reeks, Co. Kerry.

Approximately 30 members of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team have been searching the mountains since 4.30am with the support of the Rescue 117 helicopter from Waterford.

A spokesperson for the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team said: “Ongoing Search, Reeks Area: The team is currently searching for a missing walker (John Dunne from Tipperary) in the McGillycuddy Reeks. Please see photo below. We are appealing to anyone who may have seen John on the hills yesterday or this morning to please contact Killarney Gardaí on 064 6631222. Thank you.”

Gardai also confirmed that the search is ongoing.

A spokesperson said: “A search operation involving local Gardaí, and Kerry mountain rescue is under way in Killorglin, Co Kerry for a missing man aged in his 60s.

“No further information is available at this time.”
