Major search launched after gang rams prison van to try free inmate

Gardai have launched an investigation after a gang rammed a prison service van to try to free an inmate.

The daring attack happened in Co Monaghan this evening on a van that was taking four inmates back to prison after they had appeared in court.

Sources say a car slammed into the van as it was travelling on the road between Monaghan and Castleblayney, close to the border with Co Armagh.

It’s understood gardai believe the gang tried to ram the van off the road and rescue one of the prisoners inside – but were unsuccessful.

The car used by the gang was later found on fire near the border.

A major search operation is underway for the gang last night and gardai were using one of the force helicopters to hunt them down.

There have been no arrests yet.

A Garda spokeswoman confirmed an investigation was underway.

She told us: “Gardaí in Monaghan are currently at the scene of a hit and run road traffic collision that occurred this evening Wednesday 15th June, 2022.

“The collision involved a Irish Prison Escort Van and a car.

“No injuries have been reported at this time.

“The road is currently closed and local diversions are in place.

“Investigations are ongoing.”

A spokesman for the Prison Service said it was aware of the incident and that gardai were investigating.
