Major road to reopen two weeks ahead of schedule

A major Merseyside road is set to reopen two weeks ahead of schedule.

Marine Drive in Southport is looking to reopen tomorrow evening (Friday, April 1) despite Sefton Council confirming the reopening date as April 14. Dowhigh, working with Sefton Council, has confirmed that they will be opening the main road ahead of schedule.

The company said that it originally aimed to have the road open on April 21 but thanks to drainage and replacement kerbing being done in good time, workers have been able to plane and resurface the road three weeks early. The work, coupled with the work completed to the southern section of the road last year, will bring improved "safety for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians".

A spokesperson for Dowhigh said: "Dowhigh, working with Sefton Council, are pleased to announce that we will be opening Marine Drive a further two weeks ahead of schedule in the evening of Friday 1 st April.

"Originally planned to open on the 21 st April, extensive drainage work has been completed in good time coupled with the replacement of kerbing, allowing the road to be planed and re-surfaced three weeks ahead of schedule.

"This completed work, along with the resurfacing of the southern section of Marine Drive completed in 2021 will bring a massive improvement to the road and ride quality, as well as safety for vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians to the entrance to Southport from the North."
