Major road to completely close for almost three months

A major road is set to completely close for almost three months.

The Daresbury Expressway, which runs between Halton and Daresbury in Runcorn will be completely closed between June 5 and September 10. The three month closure was put in place by Halton Council to create a junction for new Redrow homes just off Keckwick Lane.

The section of road between Innovation Way and Pitts Heath Lane roundabout will be completely closed to traffic during this time. A diversion will be in place running through Moore along Runcorn Road, Hobb Lane and the A56 Chester Road.

People living in the area have been in touch with Weaver Vale MP Mike Amesbury and newly-elected councillor for Daresbury, Moore & Sandymoor, Mike Ryan, to express their concerns about the closure. People have said they fear the closure will lead to a "rat-run" through nearby neighbourhoods.

One constituent said: “You will be aware Runcorn Road is totally unsuitable for additional volumes of traffic, as it features a single carriageway frequently obstructed by parked vehicles, a very narrow bridge with sharp bends, narrow pavements, poor sight lines due to adverse bends and high hedges, and most importantly a weight restriction which is not effectively enforced.”

Others are also worried about how the closure will impact their daily commute and school runs. Mr Amesbury and Councillor Ryan, have written to Halton Council chief executive Stephen Young asking why a full road closure is necessary and for almost three months.

They wrote: “We note the intention the expressway would be opened during the Creamfields festival (August 24-29). In light of this, we would ask the council to expand on the necessity of why a full road closure would need to remain in place aside from this period.”
