Major road closed after three-car smash leaves 4x4 on its side

A major road remains closed this afternoon after a collision involving three vehicles. The incident happened near Baguley in Wythenshawe and has led to the closure of a section of the A560 Altrincham Road.

Images from the scene show a 4x4 lying on its side by the side of the road, with glass and other debris strewn across the carriageway. A second car, a blue Audi, was also pictured with damage to its front end and bonnet.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed three cars were involved in the incident, with emergency services called to the scene at 2.06pm on Tuesday. Police officers attended, together with North West Ambulance Service and firefighters.

Thankfully, despite the damage, a spokesman for GMP confirmed there were no initial reports of any injuries. It's understood the collision occurred at Altrincham Road's junction with Moor Road and Southmoor Road, a busy crossroads.

Passers-by at the scene at the time ran to the 4X4 left on its side - believed to be a Toyota Land Cruiser - as emergency services raced to the scene. No further information has been revealed.

But according to traffic service INRIX, diversions were put in place. They said the A560 Altrincham Road was blocked in both directions, with queueing traffic, due to the accident at Southmoor Road. Police were said to be directing traffic.

INRIX said traffic approaching northbound from Southmoor Road couldn't cross the junction, but could still get onto Altrincham Road westbound and eastbound. Traffic approaching southbound from Moor Road was able to cross the junction.

Transport for Greater Manchester said: "Due to a police incident Altrincham Road is currently closed eastbound and Moor Road is closed southbound at their shared junction. Use alternate routes where possible e.g. Wythenshawe Rd and Ferndown Road."
