Major plan unveiled to demolish Beeston garage and petrol station for new flats

A petrol station and garage in Beeston could be demolished to make way for dozens of new flats. It comes after plans were put forward for a new four-storey apartment block at the site of the Beeston Car Centre in Broadgate.

The latest plans have been tabled by an applicant referred to as Mr Hall, whose first name was not included in the planning application submitted to Broxtowe Borough Council.

It forms the latest in a number of new housing projects in the town, with separate developments having gone through the planning process to provide private accommodation for students.

Though the application for the Beeston Car Centre doesn't specify who the flats would be for, people in the town spoke of the scale of new development in general. Carer Anita Lamb, 54, said: “There’s a lot being built in Beeston at the moment.

"It seems a bit excessive. I don’t think building flats, or student accommodation, should be put on every available site.” In the latest plans, 32 studio flats could be built if the application is approved.

"Our proposal seeks to construct a four storey purpose-built apartment block that will occupy the site whilst taking into consideration the existing neighbouring properties, along with recent planning consent granted close to the site," a planning statement reads.

Examples of separate developments nearby include plans to build a new block of student flats on the site of the former Kings Carpets shop, on the corner of High Road and Marlborough Road. Developers were successful in appealing a borough council decision to turn down those plans which were subsequently approved.

Planning permission was also granted to use Broadgate House - a former office block - for student accommodation, with 84 beds. A vast new mixed residential development is also planned for the former Nottingham College campus in High Road, Chilwell.

After learning of the latest plans for the car centre site, other people in the town said they'd like to see more affordable housing instead. Retired Peter McGuinness, who is 70 years old and from Beeston, said: “I’d rather see affordable housing to look after local people."

Glen Weller, who is 80 years old and has lived in Beeston for 52 years, described the latest plans as 'ludicrous'. For one it’s going to be straight opposite [Broadgate House]. Also where the college is there’s supposed to be flats there. It’s absolutely ludicrous. I think it’s probably useful having that little garage here, there’s not a lot in Beeston.”
