A major junction has been described as "horrible" for pedestrians to cross and tricky for drivers to turn right, as residents living nearby have given mixed views on what should be done. The junction of the A60 Mansfield Road / A611 Thackeray's Lane / Ribblesdale Road can be busy through the day, and even more so at peak times.
It's within Daybrook Square, which is home to The Vale pub, and shops such as Sherwood Lighting and a Kwik Fit among others. The four way junction has traffic lights in each direction, and pedestrians can cross by going halfway across the road, and then waiting for the next set of lights to change.
But residents in the area raised a number of different concerns, with some saying they have trouble crossing it at times, and others saying they avoid turning right across the junction completely. One described it as "awful" to cross.
Anne Cassidy, 60, said: "It's slow when you're trying to cross the road as you have to wait in the middle. It's awful, it's horrible."
Frank Pilgrim, 90, who lives on Ribblesdale Road, said: "I've lived in the area since October, I still drive and personally, I've not had any problems. I've heard people saying if you need to turn right then you need to be careful.
"My biggest worry is trying to cross the road, as it's not always clear which direction the cars are coming from and they can come around quickly. I cross it every Thursday to meet my friend at The Vale pub, have a pint and have a carvery."
Jill Meadows, 64, said: "I never turn right out of Ribblesdale Road, there is traffic everywhere unless it's really early in the morning. I usually take the long way round if I need to turn right.
"I don't have any problems crossing it as a pedestrian though."
Nottinghamshire County Council, the authority for highways, was contacted for comment. Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Labour councillor John Clarke MBE, who represents Netherfield, said: "I know first-hand what a busy and difficult junction this can be at times and would welcome a review of the current infrastructure by the Highways Authority to help make the area safer and easier to use.
"There are residents nearby who struggle to get in and out of their properties, there are local businesses on all sides of this junction that we want visitors to be able to access easily and we even have our own Thackeray's Lane recreation ground on one side that residents should be able to use without difficulty. Driving habits, the number of road users and types of vehicles on the roads and changed significantly since this junction would have first been developed, and I think a review of this area would be a huge benefit to the nearby residents, businesses and visitors."
