Major Lanarkshire stores to close doors to mark Queen's funeral

Major retailers across Lanarkshire have announced they will be closing their doors next week to mark the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

The late British monarch passed away peacefully at Balmoral Castle on Thursday, September 8.

Her funeral has been arranged for Monday, September 19 at 11am, which has now been officially designated as a bank holiday by King Charles III.

Following the announcement, multiple major retailers and supermarkets announced a change to their normal operating hours as a mark of respect for the Queen.

Asda, Tesco, Morrisons and Aldi will be closing for four hours between 10am and 2pm.

While Tesco have confirmed that bigger stores will be closed on the day of the funeral and smaller Express shops will open from 5pm. Online orders from Tesco will not be fulfilled on this day.

Jason Tarry, Tesco UK CEO said: “We want to express our deepest condolences to the Royal Family, as well as our gratitude to Her Majesty The Queen for her unwavering service.

"On Monday, September 19, in order for our colleagues to pay their respects, our large stores will be closed all day and our Express stores will remain closed until 5pm.”

John Lewis, Waitrose and Primark have all confirmed they will be closing their doors for the entire day.

Lidl, Poundland, Argos, Dunelm and B&Q have become the latest big-name retailers to announce they will be closing their doors to all branches and other services on Monday, September 19.

This will also include Argos stores located within Sainsbury's.

DIY retailer B&Q also announced that they will be temporarily suspending their click + collect and home delivery services on September 19.

The DIY chain Tweeted: "As a mark of respect for the State Funeral for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and to offer our colleagues the opportunity to pay their respects, we have taken the decision to close all our UK stores on Monday, September 19."
