Major Irish supermarkets including Tesco, Lidl, Aldi and Supervalu cut price of butter

Four major Irish supermarkets will be slashing butter prices this week following massive drops in milk prices.

Although milk has been fluctuating in price over the last year, due to the increased cost of production, on Friday budget supermarket Lidl became the first to drop its milk prices - prompting other supermarkets to follow suit.

Now, Tesco, Lidl, Aldi and Supervalu have all confirmed that own brand butter prices will be dropping.

In a statement to the Irish Mirror, Lidl confirmed its price drop: “At Lidl, we are committed to our position in providing the best value for money in the market for our customers. We are pleased to confirm that we will be reducing prices on our private-label Dairy Manor butter effective from tomorrow, May 4.

“This price reduction will see our Irish Creamery Butter (454g) reduced by 40c, Irish Creamery Butter (227g) reduced by 14c and Irish Creamery Butter Unsalted (227g) reduced by 14c.”

The supermarket chains price drop is as follows:

  • Irish Creamery butter (454g) €3.39 -> €2.99
  • Irish Creamery butter (227g) €1.99 -> €1.85
  • Irish Creamery butter unsalted (227g) €1.99 -> €1.85

Aldi also told the Irish Mirror that it was dropping its prices. Although no statement was available from the German multinational, it did confirm that it would be dropping “the price of butter by 40 cents on the pound and 14 cents on the half pound, to 2.99 and 1.85 respectively.”

Supervalu has also announced that its butter will be dropping in price, releasing a statement on Wednesday that said: “The retail price of SuperValu’s 454g own brand butter will reduce by €0.40c from €3.39 to €2.99 from Thursday, May 4.”

Supermarket chain Tesco will also be slashing butter prices on Thursday by 40 cents for a 454g pack of butter, meaning it will cost just €2.99.

Dunnes Stores has been contacted for comment regarding the price of its own brand of butter.
