Major incident declared after 'gas explosion' flattens house in Wales as public urged to avoid area

A major incident has been declared after a 'gas explosion' flattened a house in Wales and left others severely damaged.

Emergency services are at the scene in Swansea area, with pictures showing scenes of destruction.

Locals reported hearing a "loud explosion" this morning, with unconfirmed reports of a gas explosion.

Councillor Rob Steward posted on social media to say it is not yet clear if there are any injuries, fatalities or people trapped in rubble.

The scene has been sealed off and South Wales Police Swansea urged people to avoid the area.

A spokesperson said: "Emergency services are responding to an incident on the junction of Field Close and Clydach Road in Morriston. Please avoid the area whilst we deal with the incident."

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they were called to reports of a gas explosion at 11.20am.

A statement said: "As well as Fire and Rescue Service Crews, South Wales Police and the Welsh Ambulance Service are in attendance. South Wales Police have declared a major incident, no further information is available at this time. For more information, please contact South Wales Police."

People living in the area reported hearing a loud bang which made their houses "shake", Wales Online reports.

One person said: "I'm in Swansea Vale and it shook our window, a friend of mine heard it in Cimla."

Another said they "heard a bang, saw a gust of smoke and roof tiles from a house go up in the air".
