A MAJOR Glasgow road has been closed by police due to a "possible serious assault".
Jamaica Street in the city centre is currently shut at the Four Corners area (8.20am, Wednesday, January 8).
Glasgow City Council said the road was closed at 7.20am due to an ongoing "police incident".
Now, police have revealed the area has been locked down while officers investigate an incident reported in the early hours of this morning.
At around 3.30am, the force received a report of a disturbance and possible serious assault on Jamaica Street.
Emergency crews raced to the scene, however, officers found no trace of anyone involved. Following the report, police have now said enquiries into the incident are ongoing.
While the road has been closed, police said the businesses on the street are still operating.
They have also said road access to Midland Street at Jamaica Street remains open.
In images captured by the Glasgow Times at around 7.45am, cops have been pictured standing guard on the street.
The photographs also show part of the major road has been closed off.
Officers are now urging anyone with information on the incident to get in touch.
Sergeant David McIntosh said: “We’d like to thank the public for their patience and understanding as officers carry out their work in the area.
“Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious on Jamaica Street in the early hours of this morning, or has any information on the incident, should call police on 101, quoting incident 0291 of 8 January.
"Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, if you wish to remain anonymous.”
