'Major disruption' as all train lines blocked between Manchester and Bolton

All train lines between Manchester and Bolton have been blocked this evening due to damage to the overhead line.

Passengers have been warned to expect 'major disruption until the end of the day' after the lines were blocked today (Monday, March 14).

The damage is believed to have affected a stretch of line near to Kearsley railway station.

As a result, TransPennine Express has said no trains will be stopping at Bolton.

In a tweet, the operator said: # Bolton will not be served. Disruption is expected until further notice.

"@AvantiWestCoast and @northernassist are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice. TransPennine Express tickets will be accepted for these journeys."

In a post on its website, Northern added: "Damage to the overhead wires at Kearsley means all lines are blocked.

"As a result, trains between Manchester Victoria / Manchester Oxford Road and Bolton are subject to severe disruption. Services may be cancelled, delayed by up to 90 minutes or revised.

"Major disruption is expected until the end of the day."
