Major change to parking at Leeds train station from today as work starts on main entrance

People driving to the train station are being warned parking has changed from today (Weds) as major works begin.

Major improvement works are starting on Leeds Train Station's main entrance and surrounding area from next week. Several changes are being made while work is ongoing - including short-stay car parking moving to the multi-storey car park from today (Wednesday, May 10).

Taxis are moving from New Station Street to Princes Square (off Aire Street) next to Wetherspoons from 7pm on Thursday, May 18. And from midnight on Friday, May 19, part of New Station Street will close to pedestrians.

Pedestrians will still be able to use the other side of New Station Street to get towards Boar Lane. However to get towards City Square, pedestrians are being advised to use the entrance opposite the Majestic Building.

The works are part of the Leeds Station Sustainable Travel Gateway Scheme, which aims to improve the station and accommodate more passengers. Leeds City Council are delivering the £46.1m scheme on behalf of Network Rail.

Work has been underway since last year - this is the next phase. The whole project is due for completion in September 2025.

Drivers are advised to plan ahead if they're driving to the station and allow more time. Cars will no longer be able to get to Princes Square from Bishopgate Street, or along Wellington Street in front of the Queen's Hotel.

Councillor Helen Hayden, executive member for infrastructure and climate, said: “These works will transform the area into a more attractive gateway to our city which meets the current and future needs of Leeds and everyone that uses the station, and alongside City Square will provide a cleaner and safer pedestrian environment.

“We understand that changes of this scale will cause disruption and people may need time to adjust to them. We encourage people to consider how these changes may affect their journeys and to plan ahead to keep any disruption to a minimum.”

Maxine Joicey, Station Customer Experience Manager, said: “These two crucial projects to further enhance Leeds Station are great news for the city. We’re working closely with our partners, in particularly Leeds City Council, to make sure the relocation of the taxis to Princes Square will be clearly communicated both in the station and online to passengers, businesses and the general public so that planning journeys to and from the station remain as simple and smooth as possible.”
