Major blaze at former Scots care home with residents evacuated 'deliberate', police say

A major blaze that tore its way through a former Scots care home is being treated as deliberate, police have confirmed.

Nearby residents of Frank Downie House in Clydebank were evacuated from their homes at 9.30pm on Saturday August 6 as the inferno ripped its way through the derelict building.

Six fire engines raced to the scene on Ottawa Crescent as firefighters worked overnight to tackle the blaze. Shocking drone footage revealed the extent of the fire as aggressive flames were filmed ripping through the building as smoke was captured billowing over the sky and into the region.

Police Scotland have confirmed there were no injuries. Officers are appealing to anybody who may have witnessed 'something suspicious' in the area at the time of the incident to come forward.

Detective Constable Colin Nichol, of Clydebank CID, said: “Fortunately no one was injured but this was an extensive fire and resulted in people being evacuated from their homes and a number of roads being closed for a considerable time.

"A joint Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service investigation is underway and I am appealing to anyone who saw anything suspicious both before and after the fire started to get in touch.

“In addition, anyone who has dash-cam or private CCTV footage that could assist with our enquiries is asked to make contact with officers.”

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 3831 of Saturday, August 6. Or, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
