PLANS for a major battery storage plant in Dumfries and Galloway have been approved by the Scottish Government.
The plant will be constructed on grassland near Gretna Green and will house almost 400 units which are similar in size and design to shipping containers.
Permission for the plant was secured by Energy Hub and was approved by the Scottish Government's Energy Consents Unit.
Dumfries and Galloway Council raised no objection to the project when consulted with the proposal.
Plans for the battery storage plant include it being connected to a neighbouring substation and will also have fencing and CCTV cameras around the site’s perimeter.
The site will have the capacity to store 456MW of power, which is enough to deliver a day's energy to thousands of homes in Dumfries and Galloway.
The sites storage systems will work by stockpiling power produced by renewable sources such as wind and solar and will release electricity when required to meet demand.
