Plans have been tabled to run a 125km gas pipeline through Trafford, with work potentially beginning in the next five years.
The proposals, from gas giant Cadent, are for the HyNet North West Hydrogen Pipeline to take gas from the company’s main production site in Ellesmere Port to a site near Northwich and onwards.
The line would pass directly through Trafford if approved – going through Partington and Warburton.

The proposals also feature gas stations above ground at Partington and Warburton – these stations can typically be over 200m across. The pipe would be anywhere between 15cm and 120cm in diameter.
The plans are currently in their early stages and are still at the pre-submission point. Cadent is currently consulting with those affected until the middle of March and will hold a further consultation later this year.
This is ahead of plans being formally submitted to the planning inspectorate as early as the beginning of 2023. These kinds of applications are not dealt with by councils, and once submitted are difficult to alter.
The scheme is part of a push to move away from the use of natural gas and instead use more environmentally friendly hydrogen gas instead.
The move away from natural gas has the potential to save millions of tonnes in emissions over the coming decades. For more information and to respond to the consultation , click here.
