Apple TV+ has recently premiered its new series 'The New Look,' which delves into the lives of fashion icons Christian Dior and Coco Chanel during the Nazi occupation of Paris. The three-episode premiere introduces viewers to the struggles faced by these renowned figures as they navigate the moral and militarized constraints imposed by the Nazis.
In the series, Christian Dior, portrayed by Ben Mendelsohn, reluctantly finds himself creating ball gowns for the wives of Nazi officers, while Coco Chanel, played by Juliette Binoche, is drawn to the privileges and safety that come with being in the enemy's favor. However, for those who resist the brutal occupying force, the consequences are dire.
The premiere focuses on Catherine Dior, Christian's younger sister and original muse, portrayed by Maisie Williams. Catherine is deeply involved in the French Resistance and is arrested by the Gestapo. She is then taken to The House, a Nazi detention center, where she endures intense pressure and torture to reveal her co-conspirators. Despite the brutality, Catherine remains steadfast in her silence.
As the story progresses, Catherine is sent to the Ravensbrück concentration camp for women in Germany. The series depicts the dehumanizing experience of the prisoners, including the iconic scene where Catherine and others have their heads shaved. Williams, who plays Catherine, agreed to have her head shaved for the role, further immersing herself in the character's journey.
Filmed in Paris, the production recreates significant locations such as Dior's apartment and fashion house. Williams found herself deeply engaged in the sets, particularly those representing the entrance to Ravensbrück. Coming from a background in 'Game of Thrones,' Williams admits that portraying the severity of World War II was a more challenging endeavor.
To prepare for the role, Williams extensively researched Catherine's story, despite the real woman's reluctance to publicly discuss her experiences during the war. Williams delved into books like 'Miss Dior: A Story of Courage and Couture' by Justine Picardie, which shed light on Catherine's story through the women she encountered during the war.
While the first three episodes are harrowing for Catherine, the series will continue to explore her resilience and determination to survive. Williams describes Catherine as a woman who simply wanted to do the right thing for her country and her people, rather than seeking glory or recognition.
'The New Look' offers a gripping portrayal of the challenges faced by Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, and Catherine Dior during one of the darkest periods in history. The series provides a unique perspective on the fashion industry's role in the face of adversity and the strength of individuals who stood against oppression.
