A street in Hebburn was submerged in water on Boxing Day after a pipe burst left familes with supply issues into the night.
Access to Station Road and its shops is still restricted on Tuesday as work continues to fix the major leak, which saw much of the street completely flooded.
Northumbrian Water said on Monday that it expected disruption to water supplies until 10pm, but it is not clear just when the road will reopen.
Photographs from the scene on Tuesday morning show a road surfacing lorry on site while engineers work to refill the hole.
A number of workers have been at the site since Monday when the water leak was reported.
The entire road, which is on the main shopping street in Hebburn, has been closed off to traffic.
A spokesman for the water company said: “Our team responded quickly to a burst water pipe in Hebburn on Monday and carried out a repair.
“The road was cleared of water and a small number of customers saw supply and pressure temporarily affected while work was carried out.
“We anticipate the road will be fully re-opened during the course of today, though we will need to go back at a later date to finalise resurfacing. This will not require a road closure, and that work will be done with temporary traffic lights to maintain safety.
“We apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank customers for their patience.”
