SAPPORO -- The Sapporo Snow Festival's giant snow sculptures in the main venue of Odori Park were unveiled to the public on Tuesday.
Among the attractions that drew visitors was a 12-meter-high snow sculpture based on themes from Ainu mythology.
The displays in the Susukino district of Sapporo also opened Tuesday, while the Tsudome site has been open since Jan. 31. The 71st annual snow festival runs through Feb. 11.
There were concerns ahead of the festival over a serious shortage of snow, with snowfall amounts lower than usual. The organizers managed to procure snow from suburban areas more than 50 kilometers away from the venues so that the scale of the festival could be maintained.
