Main road will close this weekend for 'unsafe' footbridge demolition

A main road will be closed this weekend after a pedestrian footbridge was deemed unsafe.

On October 7, a vehicle hit the A5036 Park Lane footbridge and after it was "no longer safe for pedestrians to use", a decision was made to demolish the existing bridge. National Highways confirmed that an overnight closure and diversions will be put in place.

There will be a full overnight closure of the A5036 in both directions between Park Lane footbridge and A5038 Netherton Way from 8pm on Saturday, October 22 to 7am on Sunday, October 23. The Park Lane junction and the temporary pedestrian crossing will remain open while the demolition takes place.

A diversion route via Netherton Way, Bridle Road and Park Lane will be clearly signposted. National Highways is urging people to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.

However, the times may need to be extended as a National Highways spokesperson said: "We will try our best to complete this work to schedule, however the times above may need to be extended if affected by inclement weather. We apologise for any inconvenience this overnight road closure causes. We will update you on any future plans for the bridge in the near future."

Sefton Council confirmed that the footbridge, located at the junction with the A5036 Dunnings Bridge Road, provides a "vital crossing point for the local community and amenities such as Our Lady of Walsingham Primary School".

National Highways said that bearing in mind the inevitable disruption, the best and safest option is to "replace the bridge completely". The new footbridge will "reflect changes to design standards introduced since the existing bridge was constructed in 1968", the Council added.
