NAKHON SI THAMMARAT: A mahout died after being gored by an elephant he had trained, at a rubber plantation in Chawang district on Wednesday morning.

His death was reported to police about 10.30am.

It happened at a rubber plantation on the mountain near Moo 2 village in tambon La-ai, Pol Capt Anan Boonsong, a duty officer at Chawang police station, said.

Police and a doctor from Chawang Crown Prince Hospital went to the scene to investigate.

They found Chaichana Matchimwong, a mahout from Moo 9 village in tambon La-ai, dead on the ground with multiple tusk wounds. An elephant was standing quietly near his body.

With help from villagers the elephant was led away, allowing police and the doctor to examine the body.

Villagers said Chaichana took the elephant up the mountain to work. They later discovered him dead but did not know what actually happened to him.
