Mahomes Provides Positive Update on Ankle Injury

The run-up to the Super Bowl still has a ways to go, but it’s never too soon to ask about the most consequential joint in Arizona: Patrick Mahomes’s ankle.

The Chiefs’ star quarterback injured his right ankle in the divisional round against the Jaguars, with the sprain severe enough to cause him to exit the game in the first half. He returned after halftime and played every offensive snap against the Bengals in the conference championship. On Monday, he gave reporters a positive update about his health status.

“It’s definitely in a better position than it was at this time last week,” Mahomes said.

Though his mobility was clearly limited against Cincinnati, Mahomes was nonetheless plenty effective. He completed 29 of his 43 pass attempts for 326 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Kansas City offense on a four-play, 26-yard drive in less than 30 seconds to set up Harrison Butker’s game-winning field goal.

With five more days of prep before the big game, it’s safe to assume this won’t be the last time Mahomes is asked about his ankle. But Monday’s positive prognosis was an encouraging first step.
