Maha Kumbh Stampede: 30 devotees dead, 90 injured, 5 still unidentified

Prayagraj: Prayagraj Police on Wednesday informed that at least 90 devotees were injured in a stampede at Mahakumbh festival whereas 30 have lost their lives, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

The stampede occurred in the Brahm Mahurat at the Mahakumbh between 1 to 2 AM when devotees reached at Sangam Nose to take a holy dip for Amrit Snan ahead of Mauni Amavasya.

DIG Mahakumbh, Vaibhav Krishna confirms toll 
Addressing a Press Conference, DIG Mahakumbh, Vaibhav Krishna said, “30 people have lost their lives in the Maha Kumbh stampede that took place between 1-2 AM. 

25 people have been identified and the identification of the remaining 5 is being done.”  

According to eyewitnesses, the stampede happened all of a sudden by a surge of pilgrims eager to take part in the holy dip at 3 AM, the start of the auspicious hour. 

Several devotees were reportedly pushing to reach the Sangam, leading to the chaos.

The traditional Amrit Snan by the akharas was postponed following the stampede but resumed in the afternoon.

Around 2 AM, the sound of ambulances and police vehicles rushing to the scene was heard through the chants and mantras echoing across the Mela.

The injured were taken to a central hospital set up at the venue, where their relatives arrived to be by their side. Senior officials were also seen at the hospital, coordinating rescue and relief efforts.
