Magnificent seven: Kookaburras battle for squad spots

A debutant will get his chance while a goalkeeper showdown looms in Argentina as new Kookaburras coach Mark Hager settles on the seven remaining contract spots.

Australia's Pro League season continues against Argentina and Belgium from February 21 in Santiago del Estero.

The four matches come after Hager's men showed promise in the former Kookaburra's first time in charge, in Sydney against Spain and Olympic champions the Netherlands last week.

Stalwarts Blake Govers, Tim Brand, and Hayden Beltz return after playing in the India Hockey League but, with seven full-time contracts still up for grabs, the focus is on fresh faces on the fringes.

Perth defender Cam Geddes will debut after missing the Sydney leg with a hamstring injury while goalkeeper Ash Thomas will get his chance to unseat Mitch Nicholson in the fight to join Jed Snowden in the main group.

Hager, who replaced Colin Batch after the side's Paris Olympics quarter-final defeat to the Dutch, has an eye to Los Angeles' 2028 Games and Brisbane's 2032 showpiece beyond that.

"It's about not filling the players heads with too much information," he said.

"Go and enjoy it. Young players love just playing and at the moment they're playing with no fear and lots of freedom.

"As they get better we'll talk about .. how they manage the match scenarios."

Tom Craig remains suspended after his Paris arrest during last year's Olympics, but is in the main squad and will be available for selection for the third Pro League tour of Belgium and England in June.

Potent drag-flicker and wider squad member Joel Rintala also remains injured in a blow to his chances of a full-time deal.

Australia lost two close contests to Spain, beat the Netherlands 4-2 but then gave up a 4-1 lead to lose in a shootout to the Dutch in Sydney.

Jayden Atkinson, James Collins, Nathan Czinner, Jack Welch and Ben White are the other wider squad members chosen for the South American campaign.

"There were some good performances from everyone involved ... we thought it always was going to be tough," Hager said of the selection squeeze.

"They showed they were capable so we keep expanding and having a look."
