As a potential Commanders sale gets more realistic, one big name in the sports world has reportedly entered the conversation. According to Sportico’s Scott Soshnick and Eben Novy-Williams, NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson has joined Sixers owner Josh Harris’s group looking to buy the team.
Since he retired, Johnson has remained a part of the sports industry through several ownership stakes. He became a minority owner for the Dodgers in 2011 when Guggenheim Baseball Management bought the team and also has partial ownership of the Sparks and LAFC, among other ventures.
In October, it was reported that Johnson explored buying a stake in the Raiders, although it doesn’t appear that anything came of it.
Besides Johnson and Harris, Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta also reportedly submitted a bid for the team.
The Commanders are not officially for sale, but there have been rumors that Dan and Tanya Snyder have been looking to sell dating back to last year. In November 2022 they reportedly hired Bank of America to explore selling part of the team. A month later the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform implicated Snyder for overseeing “a toxic workplace culture by ignoring and downplaying sexual misconduct” within the Commanders’ organization.
