'Magic formula' Leeds United are using to make a 'difference' in the transfer market

Leeds United have been using scouting tool SciSports to help identify potential signings in the transfer market. The Whites have already acquired Max Wober from Red Bull Salzburg, and look poised to add another in the shape of Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim.

Jesse Marsch made seven signings during his first transfer window at the helm last summer. Luis Sinisterra, Tyler Adams and Wilfried Gnonto were among the summer recruits, while Leeds have previously invested in youth with the intention of developing and nurturing their talent.

Crysencio Summerville and Sam Greenwood are prime examples of this philosophy, but Leeds, along with 74 other clubs, have been receiving a helping hand with their transfer activity.

SciSports director Sebastiaan Pot outlined how the scouting tool works, and why so many teams are using it in an interview with Algemeen Dagblad [via Sports Witness].

“We now work for 75 clubs. Among others, Union Berlin, Ajax, Feyenoord, Leeds United, Rapid Wien, Legia Warsaw, Red Star Belgrade, Club America in Mexico and Cerezo Osaka from Japan,” he told the newspaper.

“Charting everything, that’s basically the magic formula. Comparing players with each other. Find clubs that match footballers and vice versa. And those who do not keep up with that development will fall behind.

”We can compare players well with other players in the same league or in similar leagues. And even better: we can make a prediction of his possibilities in the future. We are really unique in that. With less budget, you can still make a difference, by using data correctly.”
