Magic Circle makes history by electing female president - the first in 116 years

The Magic Circle has made history by electing its first-ever female president - breaking a tradition of electing men that has lasted for 116 years.

The group is an elite organisation where entry cannot be bought, it has to be earned, and until 1991 you were unable to earn it as a woman as the club was strictly for men.

But the governing organisation of the magic industry has shown it is progressive, as they have appointed their first female president - Megan Swann, 28.

Megan, from Eltham, London, said that the appointment was an 'honour', and that she hopes she can be an inspiration for other women and show that 'they are welcome in the magic community'.

Megan said: "When I first started it didn't occur to me that there weren't female magicians, when I grew up I watched Stephen Mulhern on the TV.

"He was the sole magician I was aware of, and it wasn't until l I joined The Young Magicians Club that I realised how male-dominated it was.

"I was lucky as other girls did turn up, I think if there weren't any others it would have been an obstacle. As a ten-year-old girl in a room full of older boys it's scary, it's hard to stick around.

"I loved magic enough to stick with it, but I can see how that puts people off. It would have been easy to walk away.

"I learned early on how important it is to be different and to stand out, so I used the fact that I loved ballet, turned it into a part of my magic - and that's helped me progress.

"I think if I tried to blend in that wouldn't have worked for me, I couldn't blend in - I stuck out. There was no way for me to blend into a room full of 80 boys.

"Because I couldn't blend in I had no choice but to be unique, and that's helped me. That drive to do it for the women, because I could, to be that role model has driven me more than I've realised as well."

Megan was a staunch member of the Magic Circle's youth league, the Young Magician's Club, where she learned skills, practiced techniques, and got the opportunity to perform.

Eight years later, when she was 18, Megan graduated into the Magic Circle and worked her way up to being vice president in 2019, before winning the vote and becoming president this year.

Megan continued: "There was a vote, you effectively nominate yourself then write an election address and there is a debate.

"There were two candidates this year, myself and another gentleman, and I won. People vote and I won by 60 per cent, which for the Magic Circle is a very clear margin.

"It feels amazing, to be the president of the Magic Circle is an amazing honour in itself but to know I've made history is the icing on the cake.

"I hope I inspire others, I hope it shows women that there are female magicians and that we do exist, and that they are welcome in the magic community."

The Magic Circle boasts 1,300 members, including HRH Prince Charles, and a firm rule of the organisation is that members cannot share 'magical secrets' with anyone but 'bona fide students' or 'historians of magic', or they will be expelled.
