Maggots crawl through door as body of dead man lay in retirement flats 'for 12 days'

Neighbours have spoken of their devastation after the body of their friend was left lying in his retirement flat.

Residents in Thirlmere Court, Harding Close, Anfield, said they began to notice a "really awful smell" on Thursday, August 25.

Social housing group Riverside was notified, and the drains surrounding the property were checked out, but the smell didn't go away.

On Sunday, the smell became "much, much worse" and residents began complaining again, reports The Liverpool Echo.

Then, on Monday, August 30, Merseyside Police were called to the property and found the body of a man.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, and police said his death was not being treated as suspicious.

Residents questioned how the tragedy was not spotted sooner by Riverside staff, and revealed how maggots were spotted crawling through the door of the man's room on Monday morning.

This prompted an emergency services callout.

In a statement Riverside Housing's Director of Operations Lee Buss-Blair said: “We can confirm a resident has sadly passed away at Thirlmere Court, our Retirement Living scheme in Anfield.

"The resident was found by a member of Riverside staff yesterday and enquiries are being made to inform his next of kin.

“We would like to reassure our residents that we are carrying out a full investigation into this tragic incident and how it happened.

"Thirlmere Court is an independent living scheme for people aged 55+.

"Residents live independently in their homes, although all of the flats have technology to summon help in the event of an emergency and motion detectors to alert our staff to any unusual periods of inactivity inside a flat.

"Our staff visit the scheme several times a week to ensure residents have someone they can talk to about their needs or any issues with their home.

"At this early stage of our enquiries we believe the motion detector in this flat was set to indicate that the resident was planning to be away from the scheme for a period of time.

"This meant the motion detector would not have flagged inactivity in the flat. Our thoughts are with the resident’s family at this difficult time and Riverside staff are on site to support our other customers who are understandably upset at the loss of their friend and neighbour.”
