MAFS Producers Reveal Their Fave Contestants & The Antics That Piss Them Off The Most

We’re just days away from the new season of Married At First Sight. Although the experts are promising a season of unparalleled drama and romance in MAFS 2025, the previous 12 seasons are going to be pretty hard to top. After all, it feels like with each year, we’re adding on more levels of unhinged on-screen goodness.

Before the new season kicks off, we thought it would be nice to take a walk down memory lane and ask expert John Aiken, and executive producers Alexandra Spurway and John Walsh about their favourite (and least favourite!) contestants from the show’s 10-year history.

Of course, one contestant that John and the producers sang the praises of was 2024 bride Lucinda Light.

“She was a joy,” Alexandra says.

“Lucinda was an absolute. She was unapologetically herself. Everything you see on camera is the exact same as she is behind the scenes.”

For John Aiken, a big highlight was 2019’s Martha Kalifitidis and her romance with Michael Brunelli.

“This was a glamorous couple, almost a Hollywood couple,” he recalls.

“What I really liked about Martha was that she a real sense about her. She was into her fashion, she just brought a real presence and charisma. I always remember that from when I first met her.”

John still remembers asking Martha how she’d cope with the circus that came along with being on MAFS.

“She said, ‘I have a Greek upbringing. Just come to breakfast at our house and you’ll see’. She was truly ready for it from the beginning.”

While John and the producers refused to give specific names for former brides and grooms they didn’t get along with during filming, Alexandra gave some fascinating insight into what it’s like dealing with the contestants behind the scenes.

“I like dealing with everyone but that’s not to say that it doesn’t come with confrontation,” Alexandra says.

“What I want when we’re filming MAFS is mutual respect. What I don’t like is when participants are disrespectful to the production team. That’s when I’ll have something to say.”

According to Alexandra, the best part of her job is working with the vastly different types of people featured on the show. However, she says it’s important to remember that going on the show can be a super heightened, stressful experience.

“You’re coming into this experiment, and that it’s highly emotional, it’s high pressure. There are going to be moments where they might not be the best person in the world, but I understand why because often they’re emotionally charged, they’re upset,” Alexandra continues.

“As a producer, you’re dealing with really happy and amazing moments, but you’re also dealing with some really emotional and upsetting moments as well. And I understand and empathise with that.”

“They’re not always the easiest to deal with,” chimes in producer John Walsh.

“Our team are pretty good at talking them down but just like any group of people, some are just more difficult to deal with than others. It’s like any workplace.”

Although the team refused to give us the details (I tried, I promise), I feel like we can read between the lines to guess some contestants who may have been difficult behind the scenes. I think it would be [redacted], [redacted] and [redacted].

Married At First Sight kicks off Monday, January 27, 2025 on Channel 9 and 9Now.
