Madonna hits back at 'ageist' criticisms over her appearance at the Grammys

Madonna has hit back at 'ageist' and 'misogynistic' trolls who criticised her appearance at the Grammys on Sunday night.

The Vogue hitmaker was the talk of the town after she introduced Sam Smith and Kim Petras for their award at the Los Angeles show over the weekend. Madonna, 64, was trolled following her appearance on stage as fans noticed she was sporting a fuller and wrinkle-free face.

Addressing the criticism, the Hung Up chart-topper took to social media to slam those who focussed more on her face than the important moment for the artists. She said: "It was an honour for me to Introduce Kim Petras and Sam Smith at the Grammys.

"I wanted to give the last award which was Album of the year, but I thought it was more important that I present the first trans- woman performing at the Grammys— a History making moment!! And on top of that she won a Grammy!!"

She added: "Instead of focusing on what I said in my speech, which was about giving thanks for the fearlessness of artists like Sam and Kim, Many people chose to only talk about close-up photos of me taken with a long lens camera by a press photographer that would distort anyone’s face!!

Celebrity friends shared their support for Madonna (Instagram/Madonna)

"Once again I am caught in the glare of ageism and misogyny that permeates the world we live in.
A world that refuses to celebrate women past the age of 45 And feels the need to punish her If she continues to be strong willed, hard-working and adventurous."

"I have never apologised for any of the creative choices I have made nor the way that I look or dress and I’m not going to start. I have been degraded by the media since the beginning of my career but I understand that this is all a test and I am happy to do the trailblazing so that all the women behind me can have an easier time in the years to come. In the words of Beyonce 'You-won’t break my soul'," she continued.

Madonna concluded: "I look forward to many more years of subversive behavior - pushing boundaries - standing up to the patriarchy -and most of all enjoying my life. Bow down bitches!"

This comes after fans took to Twitter following the awards and claimed the singer looked 'unrecognisable' sporting her new look. "If they didn’t announce that was Madonna I’d have no idea who this person presenting at the Grammys was," one wrote.

Madonna has hit out at "ageist" critics who commented on her appearance at the Grammys (2023 for The Recording Academy)

Another penned: ""Me attempting to ignore the fact that Madonna has a whole new face. #GRAMMYs".

"Sad what Madonna's done to herself because she looks like she's wearing a prosthetic mask or Halloween false face," said someone else. While another added: "I’m all for cosmetic surgery but @Madonna should have left her face alone after her last lift. Her hair, makeup & eyebrows make her only look worse. The mother of reinvention needs an intervention. And yes, I’ll be paying 1,300 to see her at MSG this summer. #GRAMMYs ".
