Madonna has asked Pope Francis for a meeting to discuss ‘important matters’ surrounding her alleged ex-communication.
The 63-year-old songstress, who claimed that she was a ‘good Catholic’ took to Twitter to request a meeting with the Catholic leader on Wednesday.
In the message, that Madonna shared with her 2.7 million followers, the Papa Don’t Preach hitmaker tagged the official social media page of Pope Francis.
“Hello @Pontifex Francis —I’m a good Catholic. I Swear! I mean I don’t Swear! Its been a few decades since my last confession,” Madonna penned in the tweet.
“Would it be possible to meet up one day to discuss some important matters? I’ve been ex-communicated 3 times. It doesn’t seem fair. Sincerely Madonna,” the message concluded.
Throughout her musical career, Madonna has famously clashed with the Catholic church on several occasions.
Her song Like A Prayer was banned by the Vatican for featuring burning crosses, which was branded by religious followers as ‘blasphemy’. Then in 1990, Pope John Paul II called for a boycott of her Blond Ambition tour, further accusing the musician of blasphemous behaviour.
In response, she told reporters at the time: “I am aware the Vatican and some Catholic communities are accusing my show of being sinful and blasphemous and that they are trying to stop people seeing it. I appeal to you, just men and women of the Catholic Church: Come and see my show and then judge.”
Since then, several leading figures in the Catholic Church have voiced their opinions of Madonna and her iconic work.
In 2006, Cardinal Ersilio Tonino called for Madonna to be ex-communicated after she staged a mock crucifixion on stage.
Then again in 2016, the Bishop of Auckland said: “There is no question in my mind that some of Madonna’s material is highly offensive to Christianity and will be found just as offensive to the majority of people of religious faith.”
Madonna’s message to the Catholic Church came just one week after it was reported that the songstress has split from her 28-year-old boyfriend, Ahlamalik Williams after three years of dating.
