Madison Keys displayed her dominance in an all-American clash, defeating Coco Gauff 6-3, 6-3 to secure a spot in the final of the Eastbourne International on Friday. In the other thrilling semi-final, Daria Kasatkina triumphed over Camila Giorgi in straight sets 6-2, 7-5, setting up an exciting showdown for Saturday's final.
Entering the match, Keys, currently ranked 25th in the world, had not reached the semi-finals of a grass court tournament in seven years. However, she swiftly changed that narrative by delivering a commanding performance against the talented Gauff. Keys seized control in the first set, breaking Gauff's serve twice and wrapping it up in just 37 minutes.
Although Gauff attempted a comeback in the second set, taking an early 2-0 lead, she faltered under pressure, committing three consecutive double faults during her service game. Capitalising on Gauff's missteps, Keys quickly levelled the playing field and maintained her composure, ultimately securing a straight-set victory and evening their head-to-head record at 2-2.
Expressing her delight at reaching the final, Keys reflected on her journey, acknowledging the challenges she had faced this year.
"I've had a little bit of a not great year so far, so being able to make a final here where I won my first title is amazing," said Keys.
"I'm very happy that I was able to have a not incredibly complicated match and get the win. I'm really looking forward to the final tomorrow."
She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete in the final at Eastbourne, the very location where she had clinched her first title back in 2014.
In the other semi-final clash, ninth seed Kasatkina showcased her skills and resilience against Giorgi. The Italian struggled to adapt to the windy conditions, leading to six breaks of her serve out of nine service games. Despite Giorgi's determination and a valiant comeback from a 4-1 deficit in the second set, Kasatkina remained composed and secured her place in the final.
Kasatkina's victory marks her second final appearance of the season, demonstrating her strong form and determination.
