A major motorway has been closed for a number of hours after a supercar smashed into another vehicle before bursting into flames. Pictures and video shared widely on social media showed a purple Lamborghini on fire and a large emergency services response after the crash.
The crash happened close to junction 25 of the M62 heading towards Manchester, with police confirming two people have been taken to hospital after the horror smash. The road was closed soon after the crash at 5.11pm this afternoon (August 22) and remains closed while investigations are carried out.
West Yorkshire Police confirmed that the crash involved two vehicles - a Lamborghini Aventador and a Mazda CX-5 - and that apart from the two taken to hospital no other injuries were reported. Motorists are urged to avoid the scene while enquiries are ongoing.
A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "At 5.11pm today (Monday), police received a report of a vehicle which was in collision with the central reservation on the M62 Westbound carriageway, close to Junction 25. Emergency services attended and established the collision involved two cars – a Lamborghini Aventador and a Mazda CX-5.
"Two people from the Lamborghini have been taken to hospital for further treatment. No other injuries were reported and enquiries are ongoing at the scene.
"A road closure is currently in place and motorists are being advised to avoid the area at this time."
