M62 middle-lane hogger faces fine, points and possibly a driving ban

A driver rooted to the middle lane of the M62 has been reported by Merseyside Police. They now face the prospect of receiving a fine, points on their driving license - and potentially a driving ban.

The motorist's Kia Sportage was driving in the lane at a speed of between 55 and 60 miles-per-hour; significantly slower than the 70 motorway limit. Other drivers found themselves having to maneuver around the slower-moving vehicle.

An officer attempted to prompt the driver to move over to lane one, with no response - and this led to their being reported.

Merseyside Police posted a photo of the lane-hogging vehicle on social media. The caption reads: "The driver of this Kia Sportage was hogging the middle lane on the M62 between 55-60mph causing others to navigate around. They failed to move over to lane 1 when encouraged by the officer so they were reported instead for driving without reasonable consideration".

Under sentencing guidelines, drivers convicted of this offence can face disqualification, upto nine points on their licence - and a fine equivalent to 150% of their relevant weekly income - if courts deem the the offence to be of particularly high seriousness.
