M62 drivers gobsmacked as they spot huge 'sperm whale' on motorway

Drivers on the M62 were stunned as they spotted a huge "sperm whale" on the motorway.

The whale was seen on back of a flatbed truck on a stretch of the M62 near Junction 38 for North Cave in East Riding of Yorkshire. Drivers were in disbelief as they passed the truck and shared snaps on social media.

Tommy G said: "Watch out for sperm whales on the M62." Another driver contacted Hull Live with a picture of the whale to question what was going on.

However, the mystery was solved as it was identified the whale was an incredibly realistic fake. The replica whale was featured as an art installation in Redcar on Teeside and more recently in Whitehaven, Cumbria.

The whale is the creation of Belgian artistic group Captain Boomer Collective, which specialises in creating location-based shows that explore the boundaries between reality and fiction. The installation is titled "Whale" - and depicts a 12-metre long sperm whale "beached" on the coast. Artists play the roles of scientists carrying out a post-mortem examination.

The whale is installed at each location overnight and gives off the smell of decay - and has been designed to raise awareness about the impact pollution is having on the environment.
