M6 to temporarily close for road improvements

The M6 is to temporarily close for road improvements and resurfacing this month.

National Highways said it will finish work in the central reservation between junction 23 at Haydock and junction 26 at Orrell Interchange.

This includes removing old signage and lighting, improving drainage and installing a new central concrete safety barrier.

Resurfacing will also take place on lane four with a low noise road surface system.

Once this is completed National Highways will then be move onto the next phase of the work, which will be in the verge areas.

This means the M6 will need to be closed to move the temporary metal and concrete barriers from the central reservation to the verge, and create the new work area.

These barriers will be secured onto the road, to keep road users and National Highways workforce safe.

A National Highways spokesperson said securing the barriers can be noisy, and "we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you."

Listed below are the dates for the full overnight closures:

  • February 10, 11 and 14 - M6 northbound between junctions 23 and 26, between 9pm and 6am
  • February 15, 16 and 17 - M6 southbound between junctions 26 and 23, between 9pm and 6am

Associated slip road closures are also required and signed diversion routes will be in place.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: "We always aim to work to schedule.

"However, unforeseen circumstances such as poor weather may mean changes occur at short notice and this may change the dates above. We thank you for bearing with us."
