M50 motorists baffled by three different speed limits within a 20 metre radius

Motorists in Dublin have been left baffled by three different speed limits marked on the road with 20 metres of each other on the M50.

One person posted a picture on Reddit of the slip road section where the N4 merges onto the M50 going northbound, near Liffey Valley. The image shows a 30km/h speed limit road sign, followed by a 100km/h sign and then an electric sign with 60km/h displayed on it - all within close proximity.

The electric sign showing 60km/h is a new variable speed limit on the M50 that allows operators to change the speed limit to help traffic flow more smoothly. The picture shows that the 100km/h speed has been temporarily reduced to 60km/h.

The Redditor posted the picture along with the caption: “I know it's 60, before someone points it out, but you have to agree that the layout design leaves a lot to be desired.”

Other people on the online forum jumped to the comments to share their thoughts on the confusing road signs.

One person added the speeds together and joked: “190 [km/h] it is, nobody can tell me otherwise.”

A second joked: “Maybe this is a math quiz, and only the drivers solving it get to drive on the M50. A new approach to congestion....”

Meanwhile, a learner driver questioned how it was obvious that 60km/h was the default speed to follow.

They wrote: “Honestly though, could someone actually point out how you'd know this? Is it more obvious from a different angle or something?

“Learner driver here and I would be confused. 60 looks like the least obvious option in this photo.”

Another forum user explained: “The electric sign with 60 is part of this new variable speed limit on the M50. If the sign is blank the default limit will be 100 otherwise go with what’s in the electric sign.”
