M5 traffic: BMW seized after motorist caught on motorway with five days left of driving ban

Officers seized a BMW after a motorist was stopped on the M5 with only five days left of their driving ban.

Avon and Somerset Police's road safety unit say an automatic number plate recognition camera flagged the car up as the driver was meant to be disqualified. They stopped the motorist at Severn View Services yesterday (Wednesday, May 25) to discover the driver was indeed disqualified, and only had five days left on his ban.

The BMW driver was "spoken to" by police and had their vehicle seized. They were also reported to court, reports Somerset Live.

In a tweet earlier today (Thursday, May 26), the road safety unit said: "ANPR hit on the M5 yesterday suggested that the driver of this BMW might be disqualified. Vehicle stopped at Aust services & the driver spoken to, turns out they only had 5 days left on their ban! Vehicle seized & driver reported to court."

ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) technology is used to help detect, deter and disrupt criminal activity at a local, force, regional and national level. It helps to target travelling criminals (those using the road network to avoid being caught), organised crime groups and terrorists alike.
