M5: Man rushed to hospital after serious crash

A man was taken to hospital following a 'serious collision' on the M5. Traffic was halted on the motorway between J21 (Weston) and J22 southbound at around 9.30pm on Wednesday (May 17).

One vehicle was involved in the crash. On arriving at the scene, emergency responders found a car had left the carriageway.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police told SomersetLive the force was joined by fire and ambulance services and the male driver was taken to hospital where he remained as of Thursday, May 18.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening and no one else was in the car at the time of the crash, the spokesperson continued. Enquiries are ongoing and officers are appealing for information relating to the crash.

Traffic on the motorway was stopped in both directions before 9.45pm on Wednesday, according to National Highways South West. Highways also said an air ambulance was in attendance at the scene.

The northbound road was quickly released but traffic queued in the southbound direction until around 12.30am on Thursday. An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: "We were called shortly before 9pm to the M5 after a single-vehicle collision on the southbound carriageway between junctions 21 and 22 (Weston-super-Mare and Burnham-on-Sea).

"On arrival officers were joined at the scene by the fire and ambulance services, and found a car had left the carriageway. The male driver was taken to hospital where he remains. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. There were no other people in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

"Enquiries into the incident are ongoing. Anyone with information or dashcam footage is asked to call 101 and quote reference number 5223115163."
