M5 closed in both directions after woman killed in horror lorry collision

The fatal collision occurred on the M5 motorway - (PA Archive)

A busy stretch of the M5 has been closed in both directions after a woman was hit and killed by a lorry in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The incident happened shortly before 3am on the northbound carriageway between junctions 24 (Bridgwater) and 23 (Dunball) in Somerset. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but the woman was pronounced dead.

In a statement, Avon and Somerset Police said: “A woman has died after a collision on the M5 near Bridgwater this morning. The incident, involving a pedestrian and a lorry, was reported at 2.48am on the northbound carriageway between junctions 24 and 23.”

The motorway remains shut in both directions while collision investigation work is carried out, and it is currently unclear when it will reopen. National Highways said a diversion route is in place, with northbound traffic advised to follow the solid triangle diversion symbols.

Drivers have been warned to expect delays throughout the morning.

Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
