M5 cider lorry fire: Diversion routes as travel times exceed an hour in places

A number of diversion routes have been put in place following a lorry fire on the M5 this afternoon (Monday, April 25).

The fire has meant that congestion has been building, specifically around junctions 20 and 21 northbound of the motorway, with the entry slip road and multiple lanes closed off. Traffic has been diverted along the A370 through Congresbury, however this route has also seen lengthy queues as traffic diverts.

Highways England said in an update at 4.30pm: "Lane 3 (of 4) has also reopened past the scene of the HGV fire on the M5 north between J20 Clevedon & J19 Bristol lanes 1 & 2 remain closed. There is currently approx 8.8 miles of congestion on approach adding at least 60 minutes to normal journey times.

Travel time, according to Inrix, is around 60 minutes. But which other routes could motorists take from the South West to Bristol, while avoiding much of the traffic fallout from the M5 incident?

According to Google Maps, at time of writing, the A38 is currently the fastest route and avoids closures on the A369. It would take around an hour and a half from Bridgwater to Bristol via this route.

The A39 and onto the A38 would take just over an hour and a half currently, while the A39 to Wells and up into Bristol would set you back an hour and 45 minutes.
