M49 crash: Diversion routes issued as 'serious' incident closes motorway

National Highways have announced diversion routes following a 'serious' collision on the M49. The crash, believed to have taken place sometime before 2pm on Tuesday afternoon (April 4), is believed to involve two vehicles and has resulted in a road closure on the motorway.

Traffic is queuing on the M49 southbound following the closure which is located between the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge and M5 at J18. BristolLive has contacted Avon and Somerset Police, who are attending the incident along with Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Traffic monitoring system Inrix reports: "M49 Southbound closed long delays, queueing traffic due to serious accident, two vehicles involved from M4 Prince Of Wales Bridge J22 to M5 J18. Congestion to M5 J17 (Cribbs Causeway) because people can't exit at J18A. Road closed around 14:05."

National Highways South West has warned of 'long delays' in the area around the crash. In a tweet, it said: "The #M49 in #Gloucestershire is now closed southbound between the #M4 J22 and the #M5 J18 due to a serious @aspolice led incident. There is also no access to the #A4/#Avonmouth from the #M5 southbound at J18. Expect long delays."

Highways have set up a diversion route around the site of the crash. "The M49 in Gloucestershire is closed southbound between the M4 (J22) and the M5 (J18) due to an Avon and Somerset Police led incident.

"All emergency services including Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management. As a result of this incident, there is also no access to the A4/Avonmouth from the M5 southbound at J18."

Diversion Route

  • Continue on M4 eastbound until the M5 at J15
  • Join the M5 southbound and continue onward journey
