M48 Severn Bridge: lanes to remain closed after lorry hit central reservation

A lane in each direction is to remain closed on the M48 Severn Bridge as repair works to the central reservation is carried out.

Early yesterday morning (Monday, November 8), a lorry crashed into the central reservation, damaging 30 metres of the central reservations and closing the bridge for around three hours.

The Severn Bridge was closed again overnight between 9pm and 6am for repair work to be carried out, but one lane in each direction remains closed this morning.

National Highways has not given an estimate of when the bridge will fully reopen, saying only that repair work would be done "as quickly as possible".

Traffic camera images from the aftermath of yesterday's collision show traffic backed up from the scene with a lorry visible close to the barrier between the carriageways.

Debris from the crash also spread on the westbound carriageway, which triggered the closure of the bridge in both directions.

The closure of lane two on both carriageways today (Tuesday, November 9) has had a major impact on traffic flow, with heavy traffic reported in both directions this morning.

Drivers have been advised to divert over the M4 Prince of Wales bridge during closure hours and busy times.

National Highways Operations Manager, Graeme Berryman, said yesterday that repairs to around 30 metres of the barrier would need to be undertaken overnight and that updates on re-opening of lanes would be issued in due course.

He said: "We are doing everything we can to get the lanes opened again as quickly as possible.

"Around 30 metres of barrier will need to be repaired and we are planning to carry the work out at night to keep further disruption to a minimum.

"An update will be issued as soon as all lanes are open again and we would like to thank drivers for their patience until we can complete this essential emergency work."
