M4 smart motorway closures to cause disruption throughout March

Travel disruption is set to hit M4 motorists throughout March.

A project aiming to transform parts of the motorway to a four-lane route will continue and is due to be completed later this year, despite the smart motorway rollout scheme having been paused in order to gather more safety data.

One part of the road that runs through Berkshire is set to become a smart motorway - from junction 12 for Theale to junction 3 for Hayes, according to reports from Berkshire Live.

Work between Reading and Maidenhead recently concluded, meaning that all previous speed restrictions have been removed and four lanes are now operating without a hard shoulder.

Just this weekend, the M4 has been closed in both directions - and more closures are set to be put in place later in the month, though only in one direction at a time.

A warning has been issued to any motorists planning on using this route this month, to give themselves more time for journeys and, if possible, plan alternative routes.

M4 closures between Friday, March 4 and Monday, March 7

The M4 is to be closed in both directions for the entire weekend.

The motorway will shut between junction 5 for Langley and junction 6 for Slough/Windsor from 8pm on Friday, March 4, reopening by 6am on Monday, March 7.

A signed diversion is in place and will take motorists onto the A4 and A355 (and the opposite if coming from the other direction). Delays are to be expected around the Slough and Langley areas.

M4 closures between Saturday, March 12 and Monday, March 14

One carriageway will be closed during the weekend of March 12 - 14.

The westbound stretch of the motorway, between junction 6 for Slough and junction 8/9 for Maidenhead, will be closed for the entire weekend.

The closure will be in place from 4am on March 12, reopening by 6am on March 14.

A signed diversion will be in place and will take motorists off of the M4 and onto the A355, A308 AND A308M.

The eastbound carriageway towards London will remain open throughout the weekend, however.

M4 closures between Saturday, March 26 and Monday, March 28

The eastbound carriageway will be closed throughout this weekend.

Only one direction of the motorway, between junction 8/9 for Maidenhead and junction 6 for Slough, will be closed from the early hours of Saturday morning.

The eastbound carriageway will shut from 4am on March 26 and reopen by 6am on March 28.

Motorists will be diverted from the M4 to follow a signed diversion on the A308M, A308 and A355.

The westbound carriageway towards Reading will remain open throughout the weekend.
