The M4 Prince of Wales Bridge had a two-lane closure for over five hours to allow National Highways to undertake repairs for a pothole yesterday evening (March 13).
The emergency repairs took place between junction 22 at Magor to junction 23 at Pilning Interchange in South Gloucestershire, and resulted in two of the three lanes being closed from just after 5pm until approximately 10.30pm the same evening.
A spokesperson for National Highways said they became aware of a carriageway defect just after 5pm on the eastbound carriageway.

They added: "Safety is always our primary concern and we set stringent standards for pothole repairs on our roads with any serious defects tackled as quickly as possible.
"Therefore, two of the three lanes were closed to ensure the safety of road users and enable emergency repairs to be carried out. These were completed at around 10.30pm and we were then able to fully reopen the motorway."
A similar event happened last Friday (March 10) where two lanes had to be closed on the westbound carriageway, also between junction 22 and junction 23, in order to repair an "infrastructure defect." Two miles of congestion had been reported as a result.
