M4 crash sees one driver taken to hospital after two HGV lorries collide

One driver has been taken to hospital after two HGV lorries collided on the M4 earlier on Saturday morning.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the westbound route of the M4 near Swindon at 3.30am on April 2 between junction 15 A346 Marlborough Road and junction 16 A3102 Swindon Road. The incident caused 50m of damage to an extensive section of the central reservation barrier, according to National Highways.

Both eastbound and westbound carriageways were initially closed after the collision. Westbound remains completely closed between junctions 15 and 16 to allow for police investigations with only one lane open on the eastbound carriageway.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Shortly before 3am today (02/04) we were called to a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the westbound carriageway of the M4 between junctions 15 and 16. It involved two HGVs and damage was caused to the central reservation. The driver of one of the vehicles has been taken to Great Western Hospital.

“The westbound carriageway is currently completely closed between those two junctions, while only one lane is open on the eastbound carriageway. Teams are working to clear the scene and we hope to have an update later this morning."

The force added it would like to thank everyone for their patience and is advising people to find alternative routes on their journeys today.

National Highways have released a statement: "[One] lorry has struck the central reserve, resulting in significant barrier damage and debris. Emergency services, including Wiltshire Police and Ambulance services have attended. Traffic is diverted to follow the hollow triangle symbol, from J16, via local roads to J15."

Delays are likely on the approach to this closure, with additional journey times also expected on diversion routes, they added.
